EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 and the Digital Product Passport: Get Ready Now
Starting January 20, 2027, operating instructions may be provided exclusively in digital form for the first time. The requirements of the EU Machinery Directive are specific:
- Operating instructions and EU declarations of conformity must be permanently available online for at least 10 years or the expected service life of the machine
- Content must be downloadable, savable, and printable
- Provide access via QR code or URL on the machine or packaging
- Deliver a paper version free of charge within one month upon request

Digital Product Passport (DPP) – Next Phase Starting in 2027
At the same time, the Digital Product Passport will require manufacturers, starting in 2027, to provide product-specific information in a permanent and structured format, initially for batteries, with other product groups to follow by 2030.
The real challenge here does not lie in providing the current status. It lies in tracking and retracing changes throughout the entire machine lifecycle: modifications, service calls, software updates, replaced components. The Digital Product Passport must not only show what a machine is like today, but also how it has changed since it was placed on the market. This makes implementation structurally more challenging than it appears at first glance.
